Once again as with the first two volumes in this series, I enjoyed this book. But again I thought it had an abrupt ending. I realize this is a multi-volume series, but couldn't Lund have found some logical breaking points? I enjoyed finding out what had happened to the continuing characters and meeting the new ones. Was I the only one to know from the moment Derek Ingalls was introduced into the story that he would end up being the guy for Rebecca? Also that Caroline would be the start of Joshua's redemption? I like an author who does not play to the least common denominator. I had to look up the word perfidy(mentioned about Arthur Wilkerson spreading stories about Rebecca). I liked the portrayal of Rebecca choosing not to marry Arthur because of his nonmembership in the church. In fact, after what happened with Melissa and Carl, I had trouble believing that Lydia had, at first, encouraged the romance. Again, I feel non-Mormons would have trouble liking or following this series. And it is definitely a series you have to read in order. I had one major difficulty with this book. Spoiler warning-end of book discussed. At the end, Joshua Steed is reconciled with his father with the aid of Joseph Smith. Up to this point in the series, Joshua has been so anti-JS-even taking part in the mobs against him. The scene goes from him inviting Nathan to stay for food to him and Nathan showing up at the Steeds with Joseph. How did this transformation happen? I had trouble accepting it. I plan to continue reading this series, but I find whereas after the first book I couldn't wait to get the second book, my anticipation of each book is less each time. I finished this book three weeks ago and have not yet requested the fourth.
