The University of Nebraska Press is happily giving new life to works of Mormon literature and history, adding new introductions by contemporary scholars. Originally published in 1934, Hafen's work is a diary of life, beginning with her birth and early youth in Switzerland, to the voyage of her family to join the Saints in Utah and subsequently to Nevada.

What emerges is a picture of courage and faith, the determination to follow the will of God as it has been made known to her. The poverty, the challenges, all make for a compelling tale.

The story is far from sensationalistic. It is told simply and honestly, a reflection of the teller. As such, the drama of individual life must supplant the sometimes-excitable tales of the group. Hafen comes across as a real person -- a person called to a task, and willing to set aside personal interests and goals for the higher good.

Glimpses of pioneer life are always valuable and interesting. Pioneer journals are especially good reading, in that you get an understanding, not just of the times, but of the person. And while we sometimes focus on larger issues, the "big picture," we must not forget that that "picture" is made up of people, each with their own stories and their own challenges.

Inasmuch as many here will likely have read this book in its previous editions, an item of interest is the new introduction. Written by Donna Toland Smart, author of Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions and Exemplary Elder: The Life and Missionary Diaries of Perrigrine Sessions, 1814-1893, she comes to her task with a wealth of background and insight. I must concur heartily with her closing thought:

Imagining yourself beside Mary Ann's fireside as she reflects on the highlights of her comings and goings and doings and dreamings can be a heartwarming affair. She and her book are truly incredible. (p. xv)

If you haven't read this vintage piece of Mormon history, I highly recommend you purchase this affordable and nicely-produced edition.
