Readers will recognize Elder Uchtdorf as one of the newest members of the Quorum of the Twelve. His selection to serve as an Apostle was notable by virtue of his relative youth and his European roots. In this little book, the author tells the story of how his family was introduced to the Church by a woman who invited grandmother to worship with her and to learn about her religion. World War II was drawing to an end, and everyone was scrambling for safety and food rations. The Uchtdorfs found a warm family in the Mormon congregation, along with a new, satisfying faith. The woman, whose name was Ewig (in English, "eternal"), became known to Elder Uchtdorf's family as "Sister Eternal." This book tells the story in a simple, childlike way, demonstrating the importance of faith, even in times of war, and of sharing one's faith with others. The artwork is the real standout in this book. Ben Sowards, who teaches art at Southern Utah University, gives the book a warm and wonderful feel. I don't recall seeing his name before, although he has illustrated several other LDS books. He has a Norman Rockwell touch, although his art is a little darker and less playful. Books by General Authorities generally sell well. What remains unanswered in my mind, however, is whether LDS families will be willing to shell out $17.95 for a book of fewer than 30 pages. I suspect many will wince at the price and move on to something else. But the book itself is beautifully presented; the art work alone is worth giving it a look.
